VAN ALLEN PROBES
The Van Allen Probes mission was part of NASA's Living With A Star Program, and consisted of twin spacecraft carrying scientific instruments designed to help understand the Sun's influence on Earth and near-Earth space by studying the Van Allen radiation belts, ionosphere, and thermosphere.
The Van Allen Probes spacecraft were successfully launched August 30, 2012.
The Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) mission was renamed the Van Allen Probes in honor of space pioneer James A. Van Allen.
Van Allen Probes B was decomissioned 2019-07-19 and Van Allen Probes A was decomissioned 2019-10-18, both due to lack of maneuvering fuel.
