GALILEO PWS GANYMEDE 7 OBSERVATION PLANNING

What's new (22 August 1995)

An overview of the G7 encounter period

Orbit geometry

And 1-day summaries for greater detail:

Magnetospheric Survey, R > 50 Rj

Spectrum Analyzer Mode:

Wideband Mode: (This is mostly irrelevant since little or no wideband data will be obtained in the Magnetospheric Survey--only occasional fill data)

Magnetospheric Survey, R < 50 Rj

Encounter Geometry

Spectrum Analyzer Mode:

Wideband Mode: (This is mostly irrelevant since little or no wideband data will be obtained in the Survey--only occasional fill data and data which is automatically recorded with remote sensing recorded observations)

Plasma Sheet Crossing

Record for ~45 minutes beginning at about 18:50 on day 89 (30 March) 1997 at a distance of ~ 46.5 Rj.

Spectrum Analyzer Mode:

Wideband Mode:

Playback Strategy:

Return LPW (Golay) wideband data at rate of 2:1 by returning every other waveform snapshot.

Trans-Auroral Observation

TAR geometry

Record LPW for ~45 minutes beginning at about 15:51 on day 092 (2 April) 1997. This observation begins with the spacecraft at about 24.4 Rj and at an altitude of about 2.3 Rj south of the magnetic equator and ends at about 24.2 Rj about 0.5 Rj south of the magnetic equator.

Spectrum Analyzer Mode:

Wideband Mode:

Playback Strategy:

Return LPW (Golay) wideband data at a rate of 2:1 by sending back every other waveform snapshot. Note that there is not currently sufficient downlink capability to return this observation.

Ganymede Closest Approach

Closest approach geometry

Record LPW for ~45 minutes beginning at about 06:58 on day 095 (5 April) 1997.

Spectrum Analyzer Mode:

Wideband Mode:

Playback Strategy:

Return LPW (Golay) wideband data at a rate of 2:1 by sending back every other waveform snapshot.
