Subject: Jan. 30, 2010 AAR event data From: Jolene Pickett Date: Mon, 19 Apr 2010 14:58:40 -0500 To: Shing Fung CC: Jolene Pickett Hi Shing, Attached is the WBD data plot for the same time period as CIS and PEACE, ie 2220-2300 UT on Jan. 30, 2010. Also attached are all of Lynn's plots for this date. You will note that from about 22:30 to 2240 on C4 there are clear (anti) field-aligned outflowing ions. Lynn calls them field aligned, but since this is the Northern Hemisphere and the angle is 180 degrees, it has to be anti. At the same time PEACE sees downward going electrons (red in panel 2 and red underneath blue in panel 3), and these are bounded at both sides by upward going electrons (blue in panel 2). There also appears to have been significant energization of the perpendicular population of electrons up to similar energies as the downward going electrons. Here is the key to the PEACE panels: 1. omnidirectional over energy, color: counts/accum 2. PA0 (field aligned) minus PA180 (anti field aligned) 3. PA0 minus PA90 4. PA180 minus PA90 Regarding the waves, I have looked at the waveforms. Since the ~2230-2240 time span appears to be an upward current region, ESWs are not expected there. The broad bands are actually highly modulated at half the spin period which you can see in high resolution spectrograms. The broad bands are caused by solitary type structures, but they do not look like the classic ESW/electron holes. In fact the classic electron holes are seen in the bounded regions I pointed out above, where electrons are going upward and the region is downward current. The ESW are expected there. There are whistler mode waves around throughout, and I've been wondering if the broad bands in the period 2230-2240 might be electrostatic whistler wave packets similar to what we've seen in the lab and in some regions of boundary layers. Oh well, we're not trying to solve everything as you know, and maybe this slide will bite the dust/ash due to too much material any way. I could always use it for my auroral workshop talk if I get there, though, so definitely not wasted time. Talk to you a little later.
