POLAR PWI PF & H EMISSIONS

PF Emissions

The following images show frequency-time spectrograms of pf and H emissions observed by Polar. The top panel of each image is the electric antenna and the bottom panel is the magnetic. The first plot for each day is a survey image while the second image for each day shows more detail. CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR A FULL RESOLUTION (1024x768) GIF PLOT.

pf emission 97/02/20

pf emiss ion 97/02/20

The following image is a higher resolution plot of electric field only for the time period where low-energy electron beams are observed.

pf electric 97/03/02

The next plot is similar to the last plot but extends to lower frequencies showing bursty, broadbanded emission (f < 1kHz) that may be correlated with the electron beams.

pf BB electric 97/03/02

The next plot is a higher resolution plot of electric field for day 97/02/20 showing broadbanded electrostatic emission for t > 03:40.

pf emiss ion 97/02/20

The next two images show a summary and more detail of emissions originally believed to be "h component" emissions, but now thought to be electrostatic electron cyclotron emissions. These type of emissions are relatively commonly observed by Polar at HIGH latitude rather than near the magnetic equator.
