SMT Applications for Space Research Instruments: Case History

M. A. Mitchell. Surface Mount Technology, 3, 47-49, 1989.

The University of Iowa has a long history of fabricating space physics research instrumentation from Explorer 1 in 1957 and continuing through the recent launch of the Galileo mission to Jupiter. Spacecraft electronics designs must emphasize reliability and miniaturization of volume and mass. In the past several years the Plasma Wave Group of the UI Dept. of Physics and Astronomy has used SMT to reduce the size and mass of space research instrumentation. This article is a brief summary of the University's approach to the use of SMT with emphasis on part selection, fabrication technique and reliability.
