Bundle cassini-rpws-electron_density Version 1.0 Cassini Orbiter Radio and Plasma Wave Science Electron Densities from Upper Hybrid and Plasma Wave Frequencies Planetary Plasma Interactions Discipline Node of the Planetary Data System ============================================================================== Introduction ============================================================================== This bundle provides electron number density values derived from features observed in plasma wave data obtained by the Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instruments, along with observed or derived characteristic frequencies, and useful positional parameters for the spacecraft and related bodies. When present, frequency values of narrowband emissions at the upper hybrid resonance were digitized and combined with measured or model magnetic field to derive electron number density. At other times, features such as the upper cutoff in auroral hiss or electron plasma oscillations were used to determine the plasma frequency and electron density. Note the disclaimer below. Users of these data are encouraged to acknowledge both the PDS and the principle investigators of the instruments whose data are used in analysis in all publications. ============================================================================== Related PDS Products ============================================================================== The data in this bundle have been derived from the Cassini Radio and Plasma Wave Low Rate Full Res data. Some of the data also used magnetic field measurements from the Cassini Orbiter MAG instrument. ============================================================================== File Formats ============================================================================== The data files in this bundle are all ASCII text. All data files are described by PDS labels following PDS4 specifications. The extensible markup language label files for the data have the same name as the data files they describe, but with the extension .xml. Each label file is in the same directory as the file it describes. All documents, PDS labels, and data files are stream format files, with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and a line feed character (ASCII 10) at the end of the record. This allows the files to be read by MacOS, DOS, Windows, and UNIX/Linux operating systems. UNIX/Linux system users may see an unnecessary carriage return character (^M) at the end of each line. Mac users may see an unnecessary line feed character (^J) at the start of each line. ASCII csv files are formatted so that they may be be read directly into most spreadsheet programs or other programs that support csv formatted files. All fields are separated by a single semicolon (;) character. All records in a single data file have the same number of fields and are terminated by carriage return and line feed characters. Fields with no data for a specific record are indicated by a having no characters between adjacent separators. Some software will merge delimiters when reading in these files which may make the data harder to understand, so the option to merge delimiters should not be used if possible. The label files contain descriptions of the fields of each data file in xml format. In this bundle, all data files share the same format. More information on the PDS4 labels used in this bundle can be found at: https://pds.nasa.gov/datastandards/documents/ ============================================================================== Bundle Contents and Structure ============================================================================== [cassini-rpws-electron_density] (root directory) | |- bundle.xml PDS4 label file describing the bundle as a whole |- readme_1.0.txt Plain text describing bundle contents, | organization, and use (this file) | |- [data] Contains primary collection for this bundle | | | |- collection_data.xml PDS4 label describing the data collection | |- collection_data.csv List of items in the data collection | | | |- [yyyy] Subdirectories for each year of data files | | | |- rpws_fpe_yyyy-ddd_vn.xml PDS4 label describing an individual | | data file with yyyy-ddd the year and day of year | | and n the version number of the file | |- rpws_fpe_yyyy-ddd_vn.csv The data files comprising the primary | archive products.
