The University of Iowa has a long and distinguished history of participation in space research, beginning with the first successful US space launch of Explorer 1 in 1958 and continuing with instruments on sixty-nine successful spacecraft. Arising from this unique involvement, we also hold the original copies of many important data sets.

The NASA Virtual Observatories strive to preserve, organize, and make accessible the important data resources resulting from spaceborne observations, utilizing integrated data environments to facilitate current studies and ongoing research.
