During normal operations of any computing infrastructure there will be times when services are interrupted, either due to routine maintenance or unexpected failures. For anticipated outages, you may want to be notified in advance. For unanticipated outages, you may want to know more about the problem. An out-of-band notification system is required so that even if power or network connectivity is down campus-wide, these status messages may still be distributed to concerned users. On the other hand, it is highly annoying to receive incessant notices of either trivial nature or even of serious nature when you're not particularly interested.
Our solution is for interested users to subscribe to the Google Groups email list, SPDRstatus, or, alternatively, to watch the Mastodon site https://fosstodon.org/tags/SPDRstatus. You can expect two to three notification messages per week. Also, you are protected from typical list noise since replies go just to the maintainer and nobody other than the maintainer(s) can post to the list. Each email notice will include a footer with links to this site and instructions for removing yourself from the list.
